"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart. I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family. Those feelings should be shared by us alone.

Although I am a well-known person and have made my career as a professional athlete, I have been dismayed to realize the full extent of what tabloid scrutiny really means. For the last week, my family and I have been hounded to expose intimate details of our personal lives. The stories in particular that physical violence played any role in the car accident were utterly false and malicious. Elin has always done more to support our family and shown more grace than anyone could possibly expect.

But no matter how intense curiosity about public figures can be, there is an important and deep principle at stake which is the right to some simple, human measure of privacy. I realize there are some who don't share my view on that. But for me, the virtue of privacy is one that must be protected in matters that are intimate and within one's own family. Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.

Whatever regrets I have about letting my family down have been shared with and felt by us alone. I have given this a lot of reflection and thought and I believe that there is a point at which I must stick to that principle even though it's difficult.

I will strive to be a better person and the husband and father that my family deserves. For all of those who have supported me over the years, I offer my profound apology."

Latin America's first gay marriage halted

Buenos Aires, Argentina (CNN) -- Latin America's first same-sex marriage, set to be held in Argentina on Tuesday, appeared derailed after a judge filed an injunction to stop the union until the issue can be reviewed further.

Judge Marta Gomez Alsina's ruling blocks an earlier holding by another judge that found city laws banning same-sex marriage unconstitutional, the court said in a statement.

Alex Freyre and Jose Maria di Bello had planned to make their marriage official at a civil ceremony and chose December 1 because it is World AIDS Day.

The registrar responsible for the civil marriages in Buenos Aires has been notified of the ruling, the court said.

The couple would attempt to get their wedding license anyway, the official Telam news agency reported.

"We're continuing with the preparations because we, as planners, nor the couple itself, have not been notified" of the injunction, said Maria Rachid, president of the Argentine Federation for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals, according to the news agency.

Gomez Alsina's injunction could not overturn the earlier ruling because she is a trial-level judge and not an appellate judge, Rachid said.

The original ruling was made on November 10 by another trial-level judge, Gabriela Seijas, who responded to a petition made by Freyre and di Bello.

Seijas ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage was illegal and ordered the proper authorities to grant the couple a marriage license if they applied for one.

The court's decision applied only to Buenos Aires. Same-sex unions in most of Argentina remain illegal.

"The law should treat each person with equal respect in relation to each person's singularities without the need to understand or regulate them," Seijas said in her ruling.

Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri said after the ruling that his government would not appeal the decision.

Monday's ruling was a temporary measure to postpone the marriage until Seijas' original ruling could be reviewed in depth, presumably by an appeals court or the supreme court, the court statement said

Countries in Latin America, a region strongly identified with the Catholic Church, have recently given more attention to gay rights.

In September Uruguay became the first Latin American country to allow same-sex adoption.

Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador are also addressing the issue of same-sex civil unions. WOW

Injured Tiger Woods pulls out of World Challenge

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Chevron World Challenge, a tournament he has hosted for the past nine years.

according to bbc: The world number one said injuries sustained in a car accident on Friday morning have forced him to pull out.

Woods was found semi-conscious with facial injuries after his car reportedly hit a fire hydrant and tree.

"I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week," the 33-year-old said in a statement on his official website.

"I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."

Woods also confirmed he will not participate in any further tournaments in 2009, although the next official fixture on the US PGA Tour schedule is the SBS Championship, an event for winners from the previous year, in Hawaii beginning on 7 January.

Woods was treated in hospital and then released following the crash in the early hours of Friday morning, but has kept a low profile since then.

On Sunday, he released a statement on his website hitting out at what he called "unfounded rumours" circulating about the circumstances of the crash.

He has so far declined requests to talk to police.

The World Challenge starts on Thursday at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell will replace the American in the elite 18-strong field for the event which raises money for Woods's charitable foundation.

Although the $5.75m (£3.5m) World Challenge tournament is not an official PGA Tour event, it features 12 of the world's top 20 players.

"We support Tiger's decision and are confident the strong field and excellent course will provide an exciting week of competition," said Tiger Woods Foundation President Greg McLaughlin.

Woods, who has won 14 majors and 82 tournaments across the globe, has won the World Challenge four times.

He did not play last year as he was recovering from knee reconstruction surgery, but the American was on hand to present the trophy to Fiji's Vijay Singh.

Woods ended his 2009 PGA Tour campaign with six victories in 17 starts, including 14 top-10 finishes, for overall winnings of $10.5m (£6.38m) following his eight months out of the game.

He also won the season-long points race for the FedExCup, plus the $10m (£6m) bonus.

Ex-Nazi' charged with 58 murders

German prosecutors have charged a 90-year-old alleged former Nazi SS member with the killing of 58 Jewish forced labourers, officials say.

according to bbc:The man is accused of murdering the Hungarian workers in Deutsch Schuetzen, a village in eastern Austria, at the end of World War II.

The court has identified the suspect only as a "retiree from Duisburg".

The victims' remains were found in a mass grave in 1995 by the Austrian Jewish association.

The German state court was told that on 29 March 1945, the accused and accomplices brought at least 57 Jewish forced labourers to a forest "where they had to give up their valuables and kneel by a grave".

"The accused and other SS members then cruelly shot the Jewish forced labourers from behind," a prosecution spokesman said.
